14th July 2004 Northumbria in Bloom Judges have been out at 9am this morning to do the summer judging. They could see that we have made an effort and fully understand the challenges we're up against. They've given us every encouragement to "keep on keeping on", so maybe in the next two or three years...we'll give it our best shot! They will be sending us a feedback report in due course which will be published on the website.
12th July 2004 Three more planters have been donated by the council and these have now been placed and planted up by Bloomers. One outside Marsha's shop and two more over the road at the foot of the steps leading up to the War Memorial.
10th July 2004 The raised bed at the side of the Punch Bowl has been cleared and planted. Special thanks once again to Carl Gippert who has done a sterling job rushing round collecting all the plants for us and directing the other volunteers.
25th June 2004 Bloomers have planted a special bed in the grounds of St Stephens Church to celebrate the church's 50th anniversary on 26th June. Volunteer Carl Gippert designed the bed for us and gave us lots of helpful directions at planting time. more...

17th April 2004 Four planters (donated by the council) were planted up today outside the Happy Shopper at the Middles. The shop owner will be keeping an eye on them. We hope we won't have to start replacing damaged or stolen plants too soon! Click here for more info and pictures.

23th March 2004 Regretfully, Thomas Street railings refurbishment is now on hold. Green Corridor members have objected to the local community environmental caretakers undertaking this job. Bloomers has today asked for clarification of the situation from the Green Corridor partnership. more...
20th March 2004 A Craghead resident of 52 years has telephoned in support of the Bloomers. She heard about our group from her regular news tape (issued by the Royal National Institute for the Blind) and now holds the record for being the first entrant off the block to put in for our local competition this year!

February 2004 Wanted - volunteers to help establish and manage the Bloomers Community Allotment at the Middles, Craghead. The jungle (!) was cut back last year by the Green Corridor Environmental Caretakers, but needs a lot more work before it becomes productive. Anyone who would like to help just send an email or phone 01207 290 639
February 2004 We have been awarded a grant of £3,157 from County Durham Foundation. Hurray! Acceptance form has been sent off, so hope it won't be too long before we have some real funds in the bank account to help us with our Northumbria in Bloom bid this year. We are also looking at further funding sources. If anyone else wants to lend a hand and have a bash at filling in and sending off funding application forms please step forward!
February 2004 Last year Derwentside Council donated 8 second-hand fibreglass street planters (green colour, 3 foot square, 18 inches high) and 8 hanging baskets (without chains) which we still haven't used. These are being held at the Morrison Busty depot and it needs to be decided where the planters will go for the 2004 Northumbria in Bloom competition.
