Northumbria in Bloom in the Village of Craghead, Stanley, County Durham, North East England, UK
Our first planters outside the Middles Store, Craghead
Saturday 17th April 2004

The chaps from the council had already delivered the second-hand planters from the council depot shortly before we arrived with our compost and plants.

Bloomers - Kieran waters in the plants
Kieran was in charge of the hose pipe. He figured we were all getting too hot at one stage, so it wasn't just the plants that got a soaking on the day!

We filled the planters up with compost after putting bark at the bottom for drainage. Before finally putting the plants in we shuffled them around in their pots to see what combinations worked best.

Carl painted around the metalwork above the store front with green hammerite paint and we also painted the store's newspaper box to match.

Volunteers left to right - Cath, (and a local elderly lady who just stopped by to say well done), Marie, Carl, Flo, Jean with Zoe at the front.

Lots of people popped in and out of the shop while we were there and some commented that the planters looked lovely, but predicted they would only last 5 minutes before they were vandalised.

We also heard one or two stories from the residents about other vandalism in the area, but reassured everybody that if the plants were stolen or destroyed we would keep on replacing them.
