Northumbria in Bloom in the Village of Craghead, Stanley, County Durham, North East England, UK
  Suggested Planting List 2004

This is a suggested list of plants which would be suitable for re-doing some of the beds around Craghead. However, there is a problem with using plants such as perennials as the council have to use weedkiller on all the beds at certain times of the year and this would kill the plants outright. There isn't much leeway on this one. The problem is down to lack of council resources. Bloomers will be looking to lobbying Derwentside Council to try and get a bigger budget allocated for grounds maintenance throughout the district.

It seems a silly that there is a general groundswell from withing the community, backed by recommendations from Government, to push for environmental improvements across the board, but no one seems to be paying heed to the fact that any environmental improvements need to be maintained and this costs money. Voluntary groups may come and go and the buck always stops with our local council on future maintenance. We should all be fighting for Derwentside's grounds maintenance to get a bigger slice of the cake.
